Terms of Use

These terms govern DocuStore Cloud, the free research preview we host. By creating an account or uploading anything, you accept them.

They do not govern the DocuStore software itself, which is free and open source under a separate licence, described in section 2.

01What this service is

DocuStore Cloud exists so that researchers, especially in academic groups and small labs without the infrastructure to self-host, can try DocuStore and tell us what they think. It is offered free of charge and is not a commercial product.

There is no service level agreement, no uptime commitment, and no support obligation. We may change it, suspend it, or shut it down at any time, with or without notice, and that may include deleting the data it holds. You should retain your own copies of any content you rely on.

02The software and the service are different things

The DocuStore software is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0. You may download, run, modify, and redistribute it under those terms, entirely independently of this hosted preview.

These Terms of Use apply only to the copy we host. Nothing here limits any right the AGPL grants you over the software.

03Your account

Give us accurate registration details, keep your credentials to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else has got into your account. You are responsible for what happens under it.

04Your content, and the rights you need to have in it

You keep ownership of everything you upload. We claim no rights in it beyond what we need in order to run the service for you, namely storing it, indexing it, extracting from it, and sending the necessary parts to the language model provider you connected.

You must have the right to upload each document and to have it processed this way. That includes copyright and any publisher or licence agreement covering it. Many publisher subscriptions restrict text and data mining, or forbid uploading articles to third-party services, so please check yours before uploading. Responsibility for ensuring these rights rests with you.

If you believe something on DocuStore Cloud infringes your copyright, write to contact@docustore.io identifying the material and your rights in it, and we will remove it.

05You authorise processing by model providers

On DocuStore Cloud you connect your own language model provider. Using the chat and enrichment features necessarily sends excerpts of your documents and your questions to the provider you connected, and by using those features you authorise that transfer.

Because the key is yours, your relationship with that provider is direct and their terms apply to what they receive. We are not a party to it and cannot control what they do with it. Our Privacy Policy sets out the detail.

06Acceptable use

You agree not to:

upload anything unlawful, or anything you lack the rights to upload
upload patient data, or personal information about other people who have not agreed to it
attempt to breach, probe, or overload the service, or access another workspace's data
use the service to generate misleading scientific claims or to misrepresent its output as verified fact
place automated load on the service beyond ordinary interactive use

We may suspend or remove an account that breaks these rules, and we do not have to warn you first.

07Accuracy of results

DocuStore produces its results using automated methods, including optical character recognition, chemical structure recognition, entity extraction, and large language models. These methods can make mistakes. Structures, compound identifiers, numeric values, assay results, and citations may be inaccurate or incomplete, and an inaccurate result can still appear plausible.

Please verify results against the source document before relying on them. DocuStore should not be used as the sole basis for any research conclusion, experimental design, purchasing decision, or any clinical, safety, or regulatory judgement.

The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement.

08Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, nor for lost profits, lost data, or lost research time, arising out of your use of DocuStore Cloud, whatever the legal theory and even if we were told such damages were possible.

Our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the service will not exceed one hundred United States dollars (USD 100).

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, in which case those exclusions do not apply to you and our liability is limited as far as the law does allow.

09Your API keys and what they cost

If you connect your own language model provider key, every charge it incurs through DocuStore is yours to pay. We store keys encrypted and never display them back to you in full, but we cannot promise absolute security. Use a key scoped and limited to this purpose, set a spending cap with your provider, and revoke it if you have any concern at all.

10Ending it

You can stop using the service and ask us to delete your account whenever you like, and we may suspend access where these terms have been broken. Sections 7 to 9 continue to apply after you stop using the service.

11Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. Nothing here removes a consumer protection right you hold under the mandatory law of the country you live in.

12Changes to these terms

We will update the date at the top when these terms change and will flag anything material. If you keep using the service afterwards, you accept the new version.
